City of Suphan Buri might be the site of the legendary Suvarnabhumi, which is mentioned in very old Buddhist writings. However the first confirmed historical settlement was in the Dvaravati period, when the city was known as Meuang Thawarawadi Si Suphannaphumi (“the Dvaravati city of Suvarnabhumi”). Its founding did take place 877-882.

Later it was called U Thong, and was the home city of Prince U Thong, the founder of the Ayutthaya kingdom. King Khun Luang Pha Ngua finally gave it the current name. Suphan Buri was an important border city, and also the location of several battles with the neighbouring Burmese.

The elephant battle between King Naresuan the Great and the crown prince of Burma in 1592, which took place in Suphan Buri.

Wat Phra Sri Ratana Mahathat history dates back not less than 600 years ago, was once in the heart of the ancient town Suphannaphum. The main stupa once housed relics of the Lord Buddha, but it was raided for treasure and neglected in ruins. The main target of the raiders was the famous version of Suphan Buri’s votive tabletss ” Phra Phong Suphan “, which are among the top five Benjapakee sought-after series of votire tablets of Thailand.

The stupa was built from bricks but without cement works. Thus, archaeologists presumed that this stupa is the art from the U Thong Suphannaphum period, the pre-Ayutthaya art.

Phra Sum Rakhang was found in the large Phra Prang of Phra Sri Rattana Maha That Temple. Phra Sum Rakhang is made of silver-based alloy. The appearance is similar to Phra Mahesuan which is one of top expensive pra from Kru Wat Pra Sri Ratana Mahathat Suphanburi.
