Phra Somdej Pilan was chief abbot of Wat Rakhang. When Somdej Putajarn Toh was 84 years old then too old to serve as abbot he felt. Thus he passed over his reign to Somdej Pilan who was then already a great disciple to Somdej Toh.
Somdej Toh taught him the secret method of making the 5 great holy powders, the way of making somdej just like how Sankaraj sook taught him last time. Which are Phong Pattamang, Phong I-thijay, Phong Maharaj, Phong Buddhakhun & Phong Tri Nisinghe.
In many occasions, Somdej Pilan made his Somdej with the help of Somdej Toh. Together both masters chanted and joint force to make the amulets which are now very rare. Thats why this Somdej also called Phra Song Somdej which means two Somdej made it together.
Somdej Pilan made his Somdej with burn bai lan (palm leafs with written of spiritual scripts and katha) and also blended with 5 type of holy powder passed down by Somdej Toh. Thus, usually Somdej pilant is greyish in colour and since many of them are kept in chedi for long period of time (follow path of Buddha), many of them with crack surface and stain due to the humid environment.
Many devotees vouch for Somdej pilan amulets for its super natural power, ability to increase metta, dangers avoidance and prosperity.

Phra Somdej Pilan was born on 9th October B.E.2365. He was a son of Phra Sampantawongter HRH Tang Krom Luang Senee Borirak and Mom Boonma. He was ordained as a novice during King Nang Klao Jao Yue Hao (Rama III) and studied with Phra Maha Toh (Somdej Toh) at Rakang Temple. When he was 20, he was ordained as a monk at the Phra Sri Rattana Satsadaram Temple (Royal Temple). Somdej Phra Ariya Wongsayan (Buddhist Supreme Patriarch Don) was a preceptor and Phra Maha Toh was the first and second ordination teacher.
After ordination, He stayed at Rakang Temple. At B.E. 2407 during King Rama V, he was granted as an abbot of Rakang Temple, instead of Somdej Phra Buddhajarn Toh (Toh Bhrom Rangsi) who passed away on B.E. 2430. His title was clerical title, M.J. Phra Buddha Thub baht Pilan, and was titled as Somdej Phra Racha Kana, M.J. Somdej Phra Buddhajarn. He passed away on 10th June B.E.2443 and was granted Royally sponsored cremation ceremony on 15th February B.E.2444.
During he was titled as M.J. Phra Buddha Thub baht Pilan, he created powder amulet made with Buddha blessed powder and burned palm leaf powder thus the amulet substance was grey and black. The blessed powder was from Somdej Toh who was his teacher. When the amulets were molded, Somdej Toh also blessed the amulets.
These amulets were called Phra Somdej Pilan. The mould was very elegant thus it should be made by the Royal artisans. Previously, it was called Phra Song Somdej (amulet which was made by 2 guru monks). Phra Pilan had many moulds. Some were distributed to disciples and some were kept in kru. The amulets kept in kru were beautiful as it had stain on skin. This is the identity of Phra Pilan to classify as genuine or fake amulets. .
