Wat Chedi Sung ( วัดเจดีย์สูง )
( Built late 14th, early 15th century )
Wat Chedi Sung stands about 1.2 kilometers east of the city’s outer wall. At 33 meters in height, it is the 2nd tallest chedi in Sukhothai after Wat Mahathat, though Wat Chedi Sung may appear taller as it is a freestanding monument.
A massive structure, the chedi stands on an almost cubical brick base measuring 14 meters on each side. The corners of the base are redented, creating a pleasing interplay of light and shadow at certain times of the day.
According to the art historian Dawn Rooney, the small size of the “bell” and high base are indicative of Ayutthaya period architecture, suggesting the monument was built in the late Sukhothai Kingdom period (late 14th, early 15th century) when the Ayutthaya kingdom was contemporary with Sukhothai.
