Phra Mae Ya, Kru Kao Mae Ya Temple is an soil substance amulet. The Buddha amulet is in the meditation posture. The skin is burr wood texture which occured from mould. The lime stian is on the skin. They were founded in Kru Mae Ya and then Maha That Temple. Blessing power is bringing appreciation to wearers. The real size is around 5 centimeters height and 4 centimerters width.

It is assumed that the word “Mae Ya” means “Phra Nang Sieng” who is the wife ofPhra Jao Khun Sri Intratid and mother of “Pho Khun Ramkamhang”.

Nang Sieng, or what Sukhothai people called Phra Mae Ya, is the consort of Pho Khun Si Intharathit, the mother of Pho Khun Ban Mueng and Pho Khun Ramkhamhaeng Maharat as the 1st stone inscription states

“…Above Sukhothai City, there are the monk’s dwelling, monastery, Pu Kru, Saridapong, Pa Phrao, Pa Lang, Pa Kham, Nam Khok, and Phra Khaphung Phi. The fairies in that mountain are more powerful than any spirit in this city. Any noblemen who conquer Sukhothai City with good respect, the city will be good. Without the respect, the spirits in the mountains will not protect the city…”

Have the story that Mother or King Ram kham kheng have strong faith in Buddhism, she leave the position as Queen and she go to the cave in the mountain for Samadhi. The King then built chedi from the hard rock and keep the Phra Kru Mae ya inside for memorial his Mother. Later the mountain well known as Phra mae ya Mountain.

Stupa chedi of Phra Mae ya is one of the most sacred and holy Chedi in Sukothai Kingdom, and Phra Mae Ya believed by many people can fulfill all your wish in good way, many people come to pray and give offer to Phra Mae Ya until now.

The word “Phra Khaphung Phi” means a spirit that is greater than others, which can be interpreted as Phi Phra Mae Ya or Nang Suaeng. It is called “Phra Mae Ya” because the ancient people regarded the King as father. Therefore, the mother of father (the King) is called Ya which can be translated overall as the Grandmother who is the King’s Mother.

Later, the stone image that is presumed to be the sculpture of Nang Sueang located at Tham Phra Mae Ya in Ramkhamhaeng National Park was discovered and enshrined at Phra Mae Ya Shrine in front of the Sukhothai City Hall until now. Popular items are given as offerings and placed on the cult image of Phra Mae Ya as Khanom Mo Kaeng.

Sukhothai Province will worship Phra Mae Ya together with the Red Cross Fair around January-February of every year. At present, the costume of the cult image of Phra Mae Ya is used as the dress of Thai traditional dancer in Thai Traditional Sukhothai Dance.
