
Phor Than Soon who is the current abbot of Wat Sukhontharam is formerly known as Lim Hong Soon.
In fact, Phor Than Soon was born in 1930 in Kelantan to his Chinese parents. Back in the 1930s, most people had no education, and those that did receive education were either from rich families or parents working in the government. However, when Phor Than Soon was 3 years old, something unfortunate happened to his mother as his young brother was born his mother passed away. Back in those days, most of the people were living in poverty. And due to the situation in the family, his father had to pass Phor Than Soon to a Thai family living in Kelantan. During an interview, Phor Than Soon could still remember the house was located behind a church in a village. At the age of 15, he went back to search for both his father and brother. After a period of time, with the assistance of noble people he finally reunited with his father and brother.During his search for his family, Phor Than Soon met Phor Long Deng who was an old monk that resided at Wat Sukhontharam at that time. Phor Long Deng found out that Phor Than Soon was looking for his relatives, and allowed him to live in the temple for a period of time. During the day, Phor Than Soon would not forget to help clean the temple. One fine day in a coincidence, Phor Than Soon had the opportunity to meet the famous Kelantan South Buddhist master Phor Than Lek, since then Phor Than Soon and Phor Than Lek forged a mentoring relationship, uninterrupted until Phor Than Lek passed away in 1975.and allowed him to live in the temple for a period of time. During the day, Phor Than Soon would not forget to help clean the temple. Although Phor Than Soon was a Chinese, he grew up in a Thai family and did not forget the customs of the Thai people. At the age of 20, he was ordained as a monk for three months. In fact, his preceptors was CK Khron the then Kelantan Monk leader and abbot of Wat Uttamaram. At that time, every monk in Kelantan had to be witnessed by CK Kron. Just three months later, when Phor Than Soon was about to be disrobed, he suddenly had the opportunity to meet with a monk that came from Thailand. The monk told him that after you disrobed you would have nothing to do and on top of that not having any education would make the situation more tough. Phor Than Soon then thought about it and started to agree with what the monk told him. After that, Phor Than Soon made a decision as he intended to go Thailand with the monk to learn more. At the age of 25,Phor Than Soon was appointed as the 10th abbot of Wat Sukhontharam to fill the vacancy.
After the master made a decision, he planned to go to Thailand with the monk to open his eyes. At the age of twenty-five, the master was appointed by the monk leader as the 10th chairperson of Wat Sukhontharam to fill the vacancy. He has been in power for 60 years and is the longest-serving chairperson of Wat Sukhontharam. He studied Buddhism and Dharma with Phor Than Lek, and is one of the master’s proud disciples. Although the master’s temple is far away, the master often goes to see the master at all costs. During the master’s 65 years as a monk It can be said that he has rich experience in studying Buddhism in Thailand. The decision of the master that year determined the fate of his life. He is currently the oldest monk in Kelantan.
