LUANG PHOR WAEN

Luang Phor Waen was born in Tambon Na Pong, Muang District of Loei Province to a blacksmith’s family. His name was Yarn and had an elder sister. When he was at the age of 9, he was ordained as a novice at Wat Bodhi Chai in Na Pong due to the fact that he needed to fulfil the wish of his mother after she passed on. However, he went on to study with several teachers and was later ordained as a monk at a temple in Hua Tapam district of Ubon Ratchathani at the age of 21.

Amongst the teachers that he studied with, one of them was Ajarn Mun who taught him the virtues of pursuit of a secluded life and the practice of mediation and Dharma in the forest. Shortly after that, Luang Phor Waen traveled frequently to the Northeast part of Thailand in search of isolated places where he could meditate. His travel would take him from Bangkok where he met Chao Khun Phra Upali Gunupamacariya of Wat Bovoranives in BE 2464 . , he then traveled to Wat Chedi Luang in Chiangmai where he made a decision to switch from the Maha Nikaya sect of Theravada Buddhism to the stricter Dhammayutika Nikaya sect.

In addition, Luang Phor Waen would travel extensively by foot through jungles and remote mountains and even ventured in Myanmar and India where he would pay homage at several historic Buddhist sites. However, the news of a foot injury has been sustained during his stay in the Seclusion of Wat Paa Ban Pong in Mae Taeng District, Chiangmai reached Ajarn Noo Suchito of Wat Doi Mae Pang, who later on arranged for Luang Phor Waen to stay in Wat Doi Mae Pang permanently. Soon after that, Wat Doi Mae Pang became the place where Luang Phor Waen stayed until he passed on. Luang Phor Waen in fact did not reside in the monastery itself but in a secluded hut not far away from Wat Doi Mae Pang.

After settling down in Wat Doi Mae Pang, Luang Phor Waen would then begin consecrating amulets and sacred images. His amulets and sacred images were all consecrated for meritorious purposes like raising funds for charitable organizations and disunited hospitalized triamists. to military personnel for their own protection. Soon many of his devotees started having miraculous experiences with him and his amulets. The most mentionable one was an incident of him being spotted floating in the sky by an air force pilot. This incident has been mentioned in the Asia Magazine.

Luang Phor Waen became popular as the pilot of the Royal Thai Air Force was flying its plane high in the sky. However he soon noticed that a monk was sitting and meditating outside his cabin. He thought that was strange and he told people about this incident when he got back but no one knew who could it be.

Out of curiosity, he got his maps out and looked at which location he had been flying and calculated that he was flying over Wat Doi Mae Pang when the incident happened. So, he went back and talked to the villagers. The villagers told him that Luang Phor Waen was the monk that they respected the most and the soldier came to a conclusion that it must be Luang Phor Waen. Besides that, Luang Phor Waen would meditate often and that makes him “extraordinary”. Soon after the incident, Luang Phor Waen became well-known all over Thailand.

Luang Phor Waen was widely rumored to possess the mystical power to float in the air, cure illness and consecrate amulets to protect wearers from bullets and knives. In BE 2522, the then- General Kriangsak Chamanand, supreme commander of the army forces gave the soldiers one batch of amulets consecrated by Luang Phor Waen to protect themselves against what had been described as the greatest enemy at that period of time, the Communist Party. In the previous year, the King sponsored a medallion with the image of Luang Phor Waen and the royal crown has been rented out to pay for the construction of several hospitals. The amulet was distributed through banks and businesses and raised billions of baht.

On 15 April BE 2528, Luang Phor Waen was found to be unable to eat or move and would soon be admitted into the Maharaj Hospital. He was operated on 4 June BE 2528 but due to various complications that have developed and Phra Ajarn Noo, then The abbot of Wat Doi Mae Pang requested the doctors not to perform anymore operations as he hoped Luang Phor Waen could rest peacefully. His request was granted by the doctors and the Governor of Chiangmai, Mr Chaiya Punsiriwong.

Shortly after that, Luang Phor Waen passed away after having served monkhood for almost 90 years. He was given a royally- sponsored bathing ceremony at Sala Ang Klaew in Chiangmai University which was attended by the King and Queen of Thailand was well as the public. There are plenty of pictures taken by reporters. What amazing many people was that as the pictures came out that images of Luang Phor Waen have appeared miraculously.

His remains were kept at Wat Doi Mae Pang for almost a year for the devotees to pay their respect. Afterwards, his remains were cremated at the Royal Funeral on 16 January BE 2529. The cremation was attended by the King and Queen of Thailand, the Prime Minister and his devotees. Just as the fire was consuming the remains of Luang Phor Waen amidst the chantings of monks and devotees, the image of Luang Phor Waen miraculously manifested within the flame. This incident has been by devotees and witnessed in many magazines and books about Luang Phor Waen.

His remains transformed into smooth grains like crystals, precious stones and class after the cremation that leads to people strongly believing that Luang Phor Waen had attained the state of an Arahant. Despite the attention given to the miracles related to Luang Phor Waen, there is no I doubt that Luang Phor would want his devotees to remember his legacy of Dharma practice.

“What is sacred? Everyone has something sacred within themselves. To be able to be born as a human being is already considered sacred. One can be sacred only from within oneself and not by any amulet or other sacred objects. Dharma is sacred and to have this sacredness, one must have Dharma within oneself.”

As a well-known monk, Luang Phor Waen often believed to have “Sacred Amulet”, something which devotees from all walks of life like to receive from respectable monks for its protective value. People at that time that travel to Wat Doi Mae Pang to seek sacred objects or amulets from him would be given the same answer as the one quote above.

Luang Phor Waen was born in Tambon Na Pong, northern Thailand. His father’s name is “Dice”, his mother’s name is “Jiang”, and he has a younger sister. His parents named him Yarn when he was young, which means very smart. 

When he was 5 years old, his mother fell ill. Although his father took his mother to seek treatment from famous doctors, his condition did not improve, as if his life was coming to an end. His mother called him to tell him that he hoped he would become a monk. A monk, and he will not return to the secular world for the rest of his life. Even when he is dying, he must wear a yellow monk robe and close his eyes. Luang Phor Waen agreed to his mother’s dying wish, and her mother passed away happily and at ease.

One night, my grandmother saw something strange in her dream. The next day, she told her grandchildren that she saw Luang Phor Waen emitting light all over her body in her dream. This may be the time for Luang Phor Waen to become a monk. Just asked Luang Phor Waen, can he promise to become a monk for life and not return to lay life? Luang Phor Waen also agreed. In BE 2439, the grandmother called him and another grandson over and asked them if they would accept ordain to become a monk in a temple? When they agreed, Luang Phor Waen was only 9 years old. 

After that, their grandmother sent them to Wat Pho Chai to receive ordination. At the age of 13, he became a novice, and then changed his name to Waen. Luang Phor Waen, who just started to become a monk, did not take the initiative to practice, but was passive, naughty and playful. But he was very smart and learned Dharma and Pali language. There is a master in the temple named Ajarn Wuhan, who is the uncle of Luang Phor Waen himself. Ubon Ratchathani, go to worship Ajarn Singh as your teacher.

One day at noon, Ajarn Singh was walking along the road with Luang Phor Waen, when he saw a strange light circle around Luang Phor Waen, Ajarn Singh felt that this image was unusual, Luang Phor Waen must be The reincarnation of gods and Buddhas, so Ajarn Singh decided to pass on the practice he had learned in his life to Luang Phor Waen without reservation.

Later, Luang Phor Waen met Ajarn Mun in Bahn Kor Forest. Ajarn Mun taught him the pursuit of a secluded life and meditation and the practice of Dharma in the jungle, and then traveled extensively in the northeast of Thailand looking for isolated places, There he could meditate. Then he came to Bangkok where he met CK Phra at Wat Bowonniwet in BE 2464, where he studied and practiced Dharma for several years. Later CK Phra took him to Wat Chedi Luang, Chiang Mai, where Luang Phor Waen decided on the forest sect (Dhammayuttika) practice. The name of the law is Sujinno.  

Trekking from one province to another, climbing mountains, crossing rivers and deep forests. He also traveled as far as Laos, Cambodia, Burma and Vietnam. In BE 2470, Luang Phor Waen arrived in Lampang. Learned from Aajrn Mun’s apprentice , Ajarn Mun was in Chiang Mai, and finally took Ajarn Mun as a teacher, studied and lived in Wat Chedi Luang for more than ten years, most of them were in the forest, and they only went back in the rainy season. 

Afterwards he traveled to Burma and India where he paid homage to several historical Buddhist relics. However, in BE 2489 due to a foot injury, he lived in seclusion in Wat Doi Mae Pang, Chiang Mai, and started helping the common people to make amulets at this temple as well. In April BE 2528, Luang Phor Waen was found unable to eat or move, and was admitted to the hospital on the 15th of the same month. On June 4, 2528, he was operated on by feeding him with a tube inserted into his stomach. Thai King often personally Visiting, accompanying and taking care of Luang Phor Waen in the hospital for two hours each time, this is the greatest honor for a monk, because it is supreme in Thailand. The Nine Emperors once asked Luang Phor Waen: “Luang Phor , can you leave me first? Can you live for me to 120 years old?”

Luang Phor Waen said: “It is enough for me to live up to 99 years old. Being a human being is very tiring. I want to get rid of the shackles of the physical body.” Therefore, the master asked the doctor not to perform any more operations, and his request was accepted by the doctor and Governor of Chiang Mai Mr. Chai Punsiriwong accepted. BE 2529 January, passed away at 9:54 pm on July 2 of the same year. The body of the master was cremated at the royal funeral, and a hospital building in Chiang Mai commemorated the master more. The name of the master. 

Luang Phor Waen once went up the mountain to practice for many years and did not go down the mountain. He was also the first monk to meet Ajarn Mun and learn from him. The master’s meditation practice is very high. Luang Phor Waen also has a very famous method, that is, he can meditate on the cloud. Ding. When Luang Phor Waen was still alive, one day the weather was bad and a pilot veered off course while flying high in the sky. While passing through Chiang Mai, he was running out of fuel for the flight. He begged for Luang Phor Waen’s help, otherwise the plane might crash or stray into the Myanmar sky. Moments later, he saw Luang Phor Waen sitting in meditation in the sky and guided him to slow down Landed slowly to Chiang Mai Airport.

After that, the pilot rushed to meet Luang Phor Waen. After kowtowing, he said to Luang Phor Waen: “Luang Phor, I saw you meditating in the sky and guided me to land safely at the airport, so I came here specially to pay tribute to you and thank you.”

Luang Phor Waen said humbly, “I’m just an old monk with no wings, do you still think I’m a bird?” This incident was reported by many media at the time. Luang Phor Waen’s profound practice and mana , which has been passed down from the previous era to the present, his compassion and love have helped countless people and are also talked about by modern people.

The master once had a famous saying: “What is sacred? Everyone has something sacred within themselves. To have been born as a complete human being is already sacred. One can be sacred only from within oneself, and not by any amulet or other so-called sacred objects. Dharma is sacred and to have this sacredness one must have Dharma within oneself.”
