Known as “Lavo” during most of its history, Lopburi Kingdom is one of the most important Kingdom in the history of Thailand. Theravada Buddhism remained a major belief in Lavo although Hinduism and Mahayana Buddhism from the Khmer Empire wielded considerable influence.
Around the late 7th century, Lavo expanded to the north. In the Northern Thai Chronicles, including the Cāmadevivaṃsa, Camadevi, the first ruler of the Mon kingdom of Hariphunchai, was said to be a daughter of a Lavo king.
During the 11th and 12th centuries, territories with a strong Tai presence, such as Lopburi (in what is now north-central Thailand), resisted Khmer control. In the 11th century, Lopburi was governed by a Cambodian prince, as a part of vassal state of the Khmer Empire of Angkor.
The Wat Phra Sri Mahathat is a large Royal temple in the center of Lopburi town. The temple was founded when Lopburi was under control of the Khmer empire from Angkor, in present day Cambodia.
The main prang of Wat Phra Sri Rattana Mahathat was built by the Khmer in the Bayon style around 800 years ago. It is argued that Wat Phra Sri Rattana Mahathat is the oldest Buddhist temple in Lopburi, dating back to the 12th century. Certainly the temple was renovated and added on to with the arrival of King Narai in the 17th century.
