Wat Mahathat is the most important and impressive temple compound in Sukhothai Historical Park. ‘Wat Mahathat’ translates as ‘temple of the great relic’ and many Thai cities have a Wat Mahathat, where relics of the Buddha were kept.
When evaluating the Sukhothai Inscriptions (on stone) Wat Mahathat was built somewhere in between 1292 A.D and 1347 A.D
The kingdom flourished for 200 years, during which its capital at Old Sukothai was a highly influential political and religious center. Eight kings would rule from the royal capital, the most important of whom was King Ramkhamhaeng (A.D 1278–99), the youngest son of the founding king. Among other accomplishments, he established Theraveda Buddhism as the national religion (replacing Khmer Hinduism) and introduced an early form of the Thai alphabet.
Sukhothai began to decline in the 14th century, as Ayutthaya’s power was on the rise. By the late 1300s Sukothai had become vassal state of Ayutthaya; in 1438 A.D it relinquished all independence.
